Insurrect! publishes writing related to the pre-1900 colonial Americas. In reviewing submissions for publication, we prioritize the writing of contingent and early career researchers as well as library and museum workers. As such, our goal is to compensate intellectual labor.

Possible genres of publication include: research-oriented medium form essays of approximately 1,000 words, cultural criticism, short narratives on archival sources and primary materials, pedagogy reflections, exhibition reviews, digital project reviews, and roundtables. Stylistically, we are looking for writing geared towards a broad, public-facing audience—not just an academic one. Personal writing is welcome.

After submitting a piece, you can expect a response from a member of the editorial board within two weeks.

We offer financial compensation to our contributing authors at the following rates:

Short pieces (300-750 words): $100
Long pieces (1000-1500 words): $150
